Bio F.R.E.A.K.S.

In New Amerika an ongoing conflict between rival corporations resulted in the Techno-Industrial Civil Wars, where the need to stay ahead of recent cybernetics and bioengineering developments has made espionage, murder and other nefarious deeds all too common. Attempting to provide order, a Secret Games Commission regulates contract and territorial disputes among corporations who agreed to bring forth their own "representative" to fight in a closed-off arena.

Of course, each company had to ensure they had the best warrior available for the duel, so they used their research experience to create some of the deadliest creatures known to man called Bio F.R.E.A.K.S., short for Biological Flying Robotic Enhanced Armored Killing Synthoids. Synthoids have the ability to re-grow tissue. Retros have cybernetic limbs. Dozers are completely machine-like in nature, save for their brain.

The eight participants hailed from the largest corporations in New Amerika: Bullzeye, a Synthoid soldier, carries a grenade launcher; Delta, a female Synthoid known for her speed; Minatek, a Dozer resembling a Minotaur; Psyclown, a hammer-wielding Synthoid dressed like a clown; Purge, a Retro with arms that fire napalm canisters; Sabotage, an unclassified female mercenary; ZipperHead, a gray Retro soldier with a spiked ball and buzz saw for arms; and Ssapo, a toad-like mutant with razor-sharp teeth.

Players choose one of eight creatures and challenge the remaining opponents, including the two boss characters Mutilator and Clonus. The game initially offers eight 3D fight arenas, each containing hazards such as toxic waste, lava, rotating blades and even meat grinders. A training arena is available to learn the more than twenty special moves for each character. Arenas also feature a tier system allowing players to fly across ledges or perform mid-air attacks using jet packs.

Bio F.R.E.A.K.S. carries a mature rating for its depiction of fatalities, mutilations, and other displays of graphic violence. The game supports the Rumble Pak for vibration feedback as well as the Controller Pak to save data. Once you've finished taking on the computer, challenge friends for the right to be called a super F.R.E.A.K! ~ Scott Alan Marriott, All Game Guide

Review

While Nintendo 64 owners have been drooling over deep Arcade fighters such as Tekken 3 and Tobal 2, Midway churned out War Gods and Mortal Kombat Trilogy, two key examples of their inability to develop a balanced fighter. However Bio F.R.E.A.K.S., while similar to both of these titles, manages to improve on certain aspects and indeed add a few interesting ideas to the fighting genre. Visually, Bio F.R.E.A.K.S. is certainly a better effort from Midway and indeed impressive in a few aspects for the Nintendo 64. Most eye catching is the characters' eccentric detail and incredible animation for some of the most life-like creations so far in a fighting title that definitely shows in the close-up cut scenes. The backgrounds are very sparse, but as noted later in this review, they aren't only eye candy.

Two features of Bio F.R.E.A.K.S. really stand out; firstly the fascinating character design and the impressive 3D air battle system. The fighters in Bio F.R.E.A.K.S. are stunning. They range from huge beast to heavily armored females and mechanically altered humans. Bio F.R.E.A.K.S. also introduces a flight system where battles often take place in the air. One button is a "hover" button and the 3D Flight Combat does become a fascinating aspect of Midway's 3D Fighter. Another impressive feature is the well-suited and interesting interactive backgrounds.

However, despite Bio F.R.E.A.K.S. impressive looks, design, and innovative 3D flight, the game is flawed in combat. For starters,, player will instantly notice that firing is performed by the simple tap of a button, therefore allowing fights to become nothing more than lame shoot-outs. Moves are also very difficult to pull off and with the fiddly controls, players will find themselves button bashing at will. This makes Bio F.R.E.A.K.S. an interesting fighting title with gruesome and life-like character design, graphics, and a few innovative features. Unfortunately, when it comes down to the crunch, it simply doesn't play the way it should. ~ Brad Penniment, All Game Guide
