Resident Evil
After receiving a distress call from the Bravo Team, an elite group from S.T.A.R.S (Special Tactics And Rescue Squad) flew into the desolate Raccoon City. Apparently, the team had uncovered something concerning the Umbrella corporation -- a biotech research company. But then, without warning, the Bravo Team vanished into thin air.
Upon landing in the small city, the members of S.T.A.R.S began to investigate. They heard some strange noises coming from the surrounding woods and realized the sounds were getting closer. Scared, they took off running and kept on until they came to a large, ominous mansion. Seeking safety they entered, locking the door behind them. Their adventure had just begun.
The characters know something isn't right upon their first encounter with a zombie -- a creature of the living dead. Something is causing dead bodies to arise and walk again. Unfortunately, zombies aren't the only creatures they'll come across. Dogs have been possessed and turned into hellhounds, freaky stalkers roam the halls waiting to suddenly jump out, and various snakes and bugs crawl about.
In Resident Evil, you play the role of either Chris Redfield or Jill Valentine. Your choice of will determine various events and the flow of the storyline. After choosing your character you begin to explore the house, which is filled with all sorts of nasty creatures -- mainly zombies -- and some devious puzzles. Puzzles may involve putting a certain item in its right place, unlocking doors, and pushing statues. Each puzzle you solve brings you closer to unraveling the mystery behind the house and the Umbrella corporation.
Among the various things you will find throughout the mansion are item boxes. Because your character can only hold a certain number of items (Chris can hold up to six items and Jill can hold eight), you will need to safely store objects you don't have room to carry. You will also come across stones that need to be placed in their corresponding cubbyholes, health and herb medication, diaries of lab technicians, weapons, and keys.
In addition to a map and radio system, you are provided with a small arsenal of weaponry. The default weapon is a melee knife but as you progress through the game, you will also come across a 9mm handgun, a shotgun, a magnum, and explosive acid and fire rounds. But will this be enough? Can you solve the mystery of Resident Evil before its too late, or will you "disappear" like Bravo Team? ~ Matthew House, All Game Guide

Review
Prepare to enter the world of Capcom's self-described survival horror extravaganza. Many gamers who have dared to step foot in its mansion admit to one stated fact, "Resident Evil is the first game to ever really scare me."The premise is good enough to strike fear in anyone -- a large mansion located in Raccoon City is under investigation due to some mysterious happenings. As a member of the elite team of police officers named S.T.A.R.S, your mission is to go inside the doomed abode and sift through countless clues and battle zombies infected by a deadly -- or maybe that's "un-deadly" -- virus.
As the plot of Resident Evil unfolds, you are taken in by the story and the depth of the characters. You soon acquire an emotional attachment to your partners in the game, so much that you really feel responsible in guiding them to safety. As a crime fighting (or is that zombie-killing) partner, you are called upon to save their lives and likewise depend on them to save yours when you need them.
The graphics contain a finely tuned balance of 3D polygonal models, used mostly in character animation and other things like items and weapons, and pre-rendered and highly detailed flat backdrops. Basically, when you see a character moving or an enemy lurking about, you're staring at 3D polygons rendered in real time. If something isn't moving, or looks "static", then it is pre-rendered. Resident Evil uses a healthy blend of both to create a truly engaging look.
Gameplay is on the slow side and can mostly be described as Alone in the Darkesque. If your attention span is strained by games like Super Mario Brothers or Sonic the Hedgehog then stay clear away from this game -- when you're not fighting enemies, it's a very slow experience. Though the control is relatively stiff, it is dead on accurate. It takes a bit of time to get comfortable with everything, but the progression of the game tends to keep you within your skill level.
One of the most important aspects to Resident Evil is the music and sound effects -- both of which are nothing short of captivating and involving. The horror sounds and shills of zombies and hounds will keep the hair on the back of your neck full staff and your butt on the edge of your seat. Additionally, the soundtrack is very creepy with ominous and ambient drones.
Resident Evil was a highly anticipated title that impressed consumers as well as the press. It won many "Game of the Year" awards and did so well deserving, not to mention it went on to be one of the PlayStation's best sellers. Every once in a while a game comes out that defines, establishes or re-invents a genre -- Resident Evil accomplished them all. ~ Adam Ziegler, All Game Guide
