Alone in the Dark: One Eyed Jack's Revenge
Super sleuth Edward Carnby has returned for One Eyed Jack's Revenge, the second installment in the Alone in the Dark series. Unlike the original, where he solved the mysteries of a haunted mansion, Carnby battles pirates on the island of Hell's Kitchen to rescue a little girl and put an end to the fearless pirate leader, One Eyed Jack, once and for all. But first, Carnby will have to solve complex puzzles that range from picking up a key and unlocking a door to manipulating and using certain items in a certain spot, all the while fending off varmints ready to pump bullets into him. Like the original game, pick up and store items in an inventory menu that also features options for searching, fighting, and pushing or pulling objects. To collect items and solve the riddles needed to find the girl and escape the island alive, you will need to use both brain and brawn.
Alone in the Dark: One Eyed Jack's Revenge, originally released for the PC under the same name, is played from a 3rd person perspective. A fixed camera changes from scene to scene and attempts to capture the action from the best possible angle. ~ Michael L. House, All Game Guide

Review
For the PC, Alone in the Dark: One Eyed Jack's Revenge was a great game, featuring super controls, a good story, and improved design. But the PlayStation version, although the same game at heart, is problematic and clunky, and falls flat on its face.First things first -- the graphics offer grainy visuals far worse than on the PC version. The polygonal characters feature sloppy animation with hand drawn locations looking washed out and unrealistic. Let's face it, if they wanted to make a decent port of this game, why not enhance the visuals? The PC version came out in 1993 and this one came out in 1996. Logically speaking, they should have given it a facelift if they wanted it to compete with the likes of Resident Evil.
Secondly, the sloppy and cumbersome controls add insult to injury. The collision detection is mind-numbingly horrible and incredibly difficult. Your character often gets caught in the air because the object properties weren't coded correctly, so picking up items becomes daunting even if standing right next to or ON the object, wasting too much time trying to maneuver. Because moving Carnby is like walking through quicksand, when you're being attacked by pirates, you'll die more than half the time, unable to turn the right way; running is almost futile. Forget lining him up for gunfights. You will waste so many bullets because of the disastrous camera angles or inability to determine exactly where your foe is standing.
On a more positive note, there are some pretty decent puzzles to solve. Most require you to pick up and interact with the various items lying about, while some are real brainteasers. Unfortunately, inspired puzzles cannot save this game from being an utter disaster. That is the best way to describe Alone in the Dark: One Eyed Jack's Revenge -- a disaster. There was no reason for THQ to port this game over to the PlayStation when it already had the far superior Resident Evil. If they thought it could compete with this and the other 3rd person games in the genre, they were sorely mistaken because this game is truly "alone in the dark." ~ Michael L. House, All Game Guide
