PGA Tour 97

After numerous golf games on the Genesis, EA Sports continues its golf series on the Saturn with PGA Tour 97. This is actually the one and only golf game released by them to appear on the Saturn. PGA Tour 97 is basically an upgrade of PGA Tour 96, a game that appeared on the Genesis as well as the PlayStation.

Two new courses have been added, Sawgrass and Spanish Bay. Before playing each hole you can view a fly-by that may help plaers to devlop a strategy. Hitting the ball is performed using the usual power arc. Using the arc, players not only affect the power of their shot, but also the accuracy of their shot. Multiple camera angles are available for players to view all of the action from. ~ Jonathan Sutyak, All Game Guide

Review

Riding on the success of PGA Tour 96 comes PGA Tour 97, a golf game that doesn't really add any new features or enhancements. In fact, it's almost like playing PGA Tour 96 all over again. But does the lack of new features hurt this game in the long run? Let's take a look.

Because the two games are so familiar, PGA Tour 97 is set up almost exactly like its predecessor. You set up your golfer, give him or her a name, and choose what he or she looks like. Then you choose what sort of game you want to play. Players can take part in tournaments, practice rounds, and stroke and match play. This time around there are two new courses to tee off on, Sawgrass and Spanish Bay.

The two new courses are dramatically different from one another in that one is located in the middle of a forest and the other is on a coastline. Each course is very nicely designed and modeled after their real life counterparts. Before you tee off on either course, you have the option to view a fly-by of the hole. This will show you an aerial helicopter view as well as give you some pointers on how you might want to play the hole.

Games in the PGA Tour series tend to rely on realistic golf physics. This game tries to simulate being on a real course, and it does it well. If you have all of the options turned on, you will have to take the wind into account, adjust your shots to allow hooking or slicing, put backspin on the ball, etc. Like in the previous game, PGA Tour 97 has a shot arch that guides you in your alignment of shot. The interface is very easy to use and the game controls well, a must have for golf games.

Of course, PGA Tour 97 has its share of shortcomings. One of these is in the graphics department. While they are not terribly bad, the visuals and texturing can be a bit grainy and this detracts from the overall realism. The characters feature lackluster animation as well.

The main thing that stands out is its lack of growth or evolution from PGA Tour 96. Aside from the new courses, it is basically the same game and this hurts it in the end. However, since PGA Tour 96 never appeared on the Saturn, this is probably the best golf game you can find on the system. ~ Michael L. House, All Game Guide
