Alone in the Dark: One-Eyed Jack's Revenge
Alone in the Dark: One-Eyed Jack's Revenge, a port-over from the popular PC title of the same name, is one part feature film, one part mystery novel, and one part ghost story concerning the kidnapping of a Hollywood movie mogul's child by a band of voodoo-empowered swashbucklers led by pirate king One-Eyed Jack. Assume the role of Edward Carnby, a supernatural detective, to infiltrate One Eyed Jack's seaside mansion hide-out and rescue little Grace. Make your way through garden mazes, avoid traps, sneak past the opposition, and take on a gang of undead pirates. Use swords, grenades, Tommy Guns, and even a frying pan on a variety of foes, from swordsmen to gruesome butlers, as well as a diminutive cook with one mean attitude, and a voodoo priestess, leading up to the big show-down with One-Eyed Jack himself! ~ Joe Foster, All Game Guide

Review
Graphic adventures rely on tone and mood to be successful and Alone in the Dark: One Eyed Jack's Revenge shows off more than an impressive graphics engine. And big characters, rendered in loud pastel colors, are easy to see from the variety of camera angles. Backgrounds, however, tend to be a tad muddled, indicating that not much work was done to transfer the High-Res visuals of the PC version to a Saturn's capabilities. Animation ranges from rather impressive to downright hokey. For example, Carnby appears to be break-dancing when he is pushing an object. Pop-up occurs occasionally, expected in earlier Saturn titles such as this. Another slight annoyance is that when Carnby walks through the mansion a forced-perspective 3D environment changes perspective much like in a movie, depending on where the player guides him. But the changing camera angles can make ranged combat frustrating, if not maddening, since a large portion of the game's strategy involves finding the perfect camera angle to aim your weapon properly. And while the music is ANNOYING, thankfully, the producers provided a toggle switch for turning it on or off. The primary sound effect, Carnby's shoes on various surfaces (tile, wood, carpet, and gravel) are notably crisp, but the matching of sounds to the on-screen action is curiously askew and when firing a pistol there is a noticeable lag-time between the muzzle flash and the sound effect. Also a problem for the footsteps, the delayed sound reaction when Carnby runs is particularly humorous. Also unintentionally funny, yet strangely fitting, are the Charlton Heston-esque voice-overs.
A review of this game can't be complete without a comparison to Capcom's Resident Evil series. In terms of cinematic style, gameplay, and combat, the two are nearly identical. However, where Resident Evil goes for gore, Alone in the Dark: One-Eyed Jack's Revenge goes for intrigue and storyline. ~ Joe Foster, All Game Guide
